Internship - Thermo-Mechanical Engineering

Internship - Thermo-Mechanical Engineering

We are looking for a Thermo-Mechanical Engineering Intern to help take the thermal and mechanical side of our in-house cryogenic hardware testing to the next step. Working closely with our engineering team, you will own a well-defined project spanning simulation and a dedicated test setup. The internship sits at the crossroads of mechanical and radiofrequency engineering. You will build the simulation tools that predict how our hardware behaves as it cools from room temperature to cryogenic temperatures, and the test setup that checks those predictions against real measurements. The role is highly hands-on, spanning simulation, scripting, experimental setup and project management. You will work directly with cryogenic hardware, sensors and code, from first lab measurements to a running system.

About Isentroniq

At Isentroniq, we are building the future of computing - not in theory, but in hardware. We enable quantum computing at scale by developing superconducting circuit solutions that increase qubit count by more than 100x at fixed cost and infrastructure size.

We share knowledge openly, challenge ideas constructively, and stay focused on what matters. Our values - gritty ambition with humility, radical candor, surgical audacity, and self-accountable teamwork - are at the core of how we work and grow.

If you're passionate about transformative innovation and ready to build what quantum needs to go further, join us.

Key Responsibilities

The internship combines two complementary projects: one involving systems modeling, the other related to model validation and metrology.

Thermal-Structural Simulation (Modeling)

  • Build a thermal-structural FEA model of a cryogenic cold finger, from the stage plate to the mechanical mounts, capturing heat flow, thermal contraction and mechanical stress during cooldown.

  • Set up a generative CAD framework for generating attachment geometries and automatically improve their performance by using the validated FEA model.

  • Turn it into a modular, scripted simulation setup (INP file) that adapts to different cryostat stages at different temperatures and mount geometries, so new designs can be evaluated quickly.

Thermal-Cycling Test Setup (Experiment)

  • Take end-to-end ownership of our thermal cycling test system, from concept to operation. Gather requirements from stakeholders across the engineering team, evaluate competing approaches, and select and commission the best-suited solution.

  • Drive the system integration across mechanical, cryogenic and electronic (DC and RF) disciplines to deliver a robust, reliable test platform.

  • Develop the metrology strategy and validation plan, and correlate experimental data with simulation results to refine and validate the thermal-structural model.

  • Implement test automation and data acquisition so thermal cycling campaigns are reproducible, efficient and scalable.

Who you are

You're a curious, hands-on Master’s student who enjoys bridging the gap between modelling and experiments. You like understanding how things behave physically, building tools that make others faster, and seeing a setup go from a list of quotes to working hardware.

Key Qualifications

  • Master’s student in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.

  • Background in finite element analysis (FEA) and simulation scripting.

  • Good programming skills, e.g., in Python.

  • Knowledge of sensors for thermal and structural measurements.

  • Communication proficiency in English.

Bonus
  • A first experience with generative CAD.

  • Background in RF engineering or cryogenics.

Personal Attributes

  • You are autonomous, ambitious, and organized.

  • You are a hands-on builder, comfortable starting from scratch and willing to own things end-to-end - setups, scripts, purchases, processes.

  • You communicate openly and directly: you welcome pushback on your ideas and are candid about both wins and mistakes.

  • You are eager to learn and grow. You see competing approaches as a feature, not a threat, and draw strength from collaboration.

  • You thrive under high expectations, pushing for breakthroughs rather than settling for good enough.

What We Offer

  • A unique opportunity to participate to the origin of a cutting-edge start-up.

  • Work with and learn from world-class talents

  • A collaborative, mission-driven culture with a focus on personal and professional growth.
